Nunavut Day July 9, 2025

This year Nunavut Day in Iqaluit was a special occasion, attended by Canada's Governor General Mary Simon. She spoke about how people all over the world are truly interested in our unique environment and culture. Hundreds of people attended the festivities. NTI President Jeremy Tunraluk presented King Charles III Coronation Medals. The music provided by Billy Kuksuk, Beatrice Deer and Kamalukutaat was really good. The Governor General, Premier PJ Akeeagok and I were happy to take some time to serve hot dogs and I even got a temporary tattoo at the NTI activity table. A big thank you to the many NTI and GN volunteers who made the day a great success. Alianait!

Ambassadors Northern Tour June 2025

I was honoured to play a part in welcoming the Ambassadors from the Heads of Mission tour hosted by Crown & Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada in Iqaluit. The delegation had the opportunity, firsthand, to see communities and meet people from the Yukon, NWT and Nunavut. It was a very special surprise to receive a gift of traditional jewelry from Her Excellency Carolyne Kamende Daudi, High Commissioner for the Republic of Kenya. I think they learned alot about the North on their tour that they can share in their home countries.

Arviat Coronation Medal Presentation June 2025

I was very happy to be invited to join Minister Pamela Gross and Minister John Main on their charter to Arviat on June 7th. It was an honour to present Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. with the King Charles III Coronation Medal. He works hard to serve his community, providing training and employment opportunities and keeping Arviammiut safe as a long-time member of the search and rescue team. It was great to visit the SIBS factory that builds prefabricated and modular buildings. It was an event filled with pride watching the John Arnalukjuak High School students graduate. A great trip. Sanikiluaq Visit To Qikiqtait Center June 2025

A big thank you to MLA Daniel Qavvik and executive director Joel Heath for giving me a tour of the Qikiqtait Crnter. The center supports the community vision of marine and land conservation, training and knowledge transfer and stewardship of the region for future generations. It is filled with Inuit heritage and culture and showcases the innovative designs created by Sanikiluarmiut using the Eider Duck. The Qikiqtait Center is an amazing facility built using modern technology to support and strengthen inuit culture and sustainable development.

Arctic Bay Commissioner’s Awards May 2025

It really meant alot to me to honour people from my home community, Arctic Bay. Many special people were honoured for their commitment to Arctic Bay. I also had the opportunity to present the King Charles III Coronation Medal. At the reception there was plenty of palaugaq for everyone and nice desserts. Nauttiqsaqtiit provided a special treat giving out caribou meat to the guests. It was a great community event.

Prime Minister Carney Visit March 2025

I was really pleased to welcome Prime Minister Mark Carney to Iqaluit. Nunavit is the first Arctic region in Canada he has visited since becoming Prime Minister. On the tarmac we shared memories of his visit to Iqaluit in 2010 during the G7 summit. During his visit Prime Minister Carney made important commitments to strengthening Arctic sovereignty and security by funding infrastructure improvements in Nunavut including housing and power generation.

Naujaat Commissioner’s Awards May 2023

I am very happy that Minister Akeeagok during his travels to Naujaat had a chance to present the King Charles III Coronation Medal to Moses Siusangnark on my behalf. Moses is always ready to help when people need assistance with household repairs and maintenance and he always takes the time to share his knowledge of Inuit culture and traditional practices. It was nice that MLA Solomon Malliki was on hand for the presentation to honour Moses. (translations to follow)
